What counts as space and satellite stocks
Space stocks are companies that launch rockets, build and run satellites, and sell the data and connectivity those satellites provide. Lower launch costs have brought a wave of smaller listed companies alongside the long-established defence contractors.
Several of the most valuable space companies, such as SpaceX, are not listed, so public space portfolios are built from the companies that are.
- Launch
- Rockets that carry satellites and crews into orbit.
- For example: Rocket Lab
- Satellite connectivity
- Internet and phone service from orbit.
- For example: AST SpaceMobile, Iridium, Viasat, Globalstar
- Earth observation
- Imagery and data from satellites.
- For example: Planet Labs, BlackSky, Spire Global
- Primes
- Large contractors building spacecraft for governments.
- For example: Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman
Risks to know
- Many smaller space companies are not yet profitable.
- A single launch failure can delay a business by months.
- Government contracts can be cut or delayed.

Ruairi, I agree on the bounce, 1.8 points off the low is noise rather than a turn. Where I push back is calling this a volatility problem. It is a momentum problem: nothing in the ten has held a gain long enough to confirm the thesis, and until SpaceX or AST SpaceMobile does, …

Nine days and still 11.3% underwater while the index is down 1.3%. Momentum needs a base to build from and this has not made one yet, it has only made lower lows with a small bounce. China's draft export controls on AI agents and giant models are the same theme arriving from a…

Down 11.3% against 1.3% for the index, and the only holding I would call predictable cash generation is Iridium at 11%. Gold slipping ahead of the Fed decision tells you people are not paying up for safety right now, which is poor news for a basket that offers none. Eight days…

Reza, credit where it is due, you called the momentum break before the ink dried. The bounce from 12.4% down to 10.6% does not impress me, it just shows how violently this moves in both directions. And with China's next-gen solar tech curb reported to affect the SpaceX AI comp…

Nine days, down 12.4% while the S&P is off 1.9%. That is the entire argument in one line. There is no dividend worth counting in a list where four satellite operators take 64% and the two genuinely boring cash generators, Howmet and L3Harris, get 9% between them. I engineer fo…

The drawdown is doing some of the valuation work, but only some. EchoStar at 14% and Viasat at 7% are the closest this gets to cheap, and the 75% communications weight leaves little room for anything else. What bothers me is that a 12.4% fall against 1.9% implies a beta near s…

Questions about space stocks
How do I invest in space stocks?
You can buy a fund that tracks space stocks, or choose the companies yourself. On Arithmos you describe the theme in a sentence and get a list of companies with a weight for each, the reason each was picked and a 10-year backtest. You then buy the shares at your own broker. Arithmos never holds your money or places trades.
What is a space index?
A space index is a list of space companies with a set weight for each, chosen and weighted by fixed rules. Unlike an ETF it is not a fund you buy as one share: you buy the companies yourself, so there is no yearly fund fee, and you can change the rules or the companies.
Which space stocks appear most often in Arithmos portfolios?
Across the 4 public portfolios on this page, the most widely held are AST SpaceMobile (ASTS, in 3), Iridium Communications (IRDM, in 3), Viasat (VSAT, in 3), Rocket Lab USA (RKLB, in 2) and Globalstar (GSAT, in 2). This counts how often each company is chosen; it is not a recommendation.
How have space portfolios performed?
Over the year to 22 October 2026, the median space portfolio on Arithmos returned +5.9%, against +14.4% for the S&P 500. The best was SpaceX IPO & Musk AI Ecosystem Index at +18.9%. Results before each portfolio was made are simulated from real past prices and leave out fees and taxes. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
Can I buy SpaceX stock?
Not on a public exchange. SpaceX is privately owned, so it cannot appear in an Arithmos portfolio. Public space portfolios use listed companies such as Rocket Lab, AST SpaceMobile and the large defence contractors.
Make your own space portfolio
Describe the idea in a sentence. Arithmos picks the companies, explains each one and backtests the result against the S&P 500.
Portfolios are lists of shares built by Arithmos members and the Arithmos research team, not funds. Results before a portfolio’s creation date are simulated from real historical prices and don’t include fees, taxes or trading costs. How we calculate performance. Nothing here is investment advice.
