What counts as car, auto and EV stocks
Car stocks cover the companies that make and sell vehicles, the suppliers of their parts, and the newer businesses in electric vehicles and self-driving cars. The industry is going through its biggest change in a century as engines give way to batteries and software.
Traditional carmakers trade at low valuations and pay dividends, while electric and autonomous-driving companies are valued on future growth. A car index can sit anywhere between the two.
- Carmakers
- Companies that design, build and sell vehicles.
- For example: Toyota, Tesla, General Motors, Ford, BYD, Ferrari
- Electric vehicles
- Makers of battery-powered cars and their charging networks.
- For example: Tesla, BYD, Rivian, Li Auto, ChargePoint
- Self-driving
- Robotaxis and driver-assistance technology.
- For example: Alphabet (Waymo), Tesla, Mobileye, Aurora
- Suppliers and dealers
- Parts, tyres and the dealer groups that sell cars.
- For example: Aptiv, BorgWarner, AutoZone, CarMax
Risks to know
- Car sales fall sharply in recessions.
- Price wars in electric vehicles squeeze profits.
- Tariffs on cars and parts can change costs quickly.

Sigrid, you were early and right, but going from -18.2% in July to -6.1% now is a real recovery, and with the S&P up 8.4% over the same days the de-rating is still sitting there for anyone who thinks the market over-punished these names. The September 22 rare earths story is t…

I have to eat part of my earlier scepticism, because 9.6% against 8.4% for the S&P over five months is a genuine lead. But look at what is carrying it: NVIDIA is a full 10% and the China restrictions keep tightening, and Michael Burry picking this week to warn about an AI stoc…

Questions about car stocks
How do I invest in car stocks?
You can buy a fund that tracks car stocks, or choose the companies yourself. On Arithmos you describe the theme in a sentence and get a list of companies with a weight for each, the reason each was picked and a 10-year backtest. You then buy the shares at your own broker. Arithmos never holds your money or places trades.
What is a car and EV index?
A car and EV index is a list of car and EV companies with a set weight for each, chosen and weighted by fixed rules. Unlike an ETF it is not a fund you buy as one share: you buy the companies yourself, so there is no yearly fund fee, and you can change the rules or the companies.
Which car stocks appear most often in Arithmos portfolios?
Across the 4 public portfolios on this page, the most widely held are Tesla (TSLA, in 4), General Motors (GM, in 3), BYD Company (BYDDY, in 2), Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF (LIT, in 2) and Uber Technologies (UBER, in 2). This counts how often each company is chosen; it is not a recommendation.
How have car and EV portfolios performed?
Over the year to 22 October 2026, the median car and EV portfolio on Arithmos returned −3.6%, against +14.4% for the S&P 500. The best was London Robotaxi Adoption Leaders — Conviction-Weighted at +13.0%. Results before each portfolio was made are simulated from real past prices and leave out fees and taxes. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
Are EV stocks a good proxy for car stocks?
Not entirely. Electric vehicle companies are valued on growth and trade very differently from traditional carmakers, which earn most of their profit from petrol cars today.
Make your own car and EV portfolio
Describe the idea in a sentence. Arithmos picks the companies, explains each one and backtests the result against the S&P 500.
Portfolios are lists of shares built by Arithmos members and the Arithmos research team, not funds. Results before a portfolio’s creation date are simulated from real historical prices and don’t include fees, taxes or trading costs. How we calculate performance. Nothing here is investment advice.
