What counts as industrial and infrastructure stocks
Industrial stocks are the companies that make machinery and equipment, build infrastructure, and move goods around the world by rail, road, sea and air. The theme includes the manufacturers benefiting from factories moving back to the US and its neighbours.
Industrials tend to track the economic cycle: orders rise when businesses and governments invest, and fall when they hold back.

- For example: Caterpillar, Deere, Cummins, Parker-Hannifin
- Construction and engineering
- Building roads, plants and grids.
- For example: Quanta Services, Fluor, Jacobs, United Rentals
- Transport and shipping
- Railroads, airlines, logistics and shipping lines.
- For example: Union Pacific, FedEx, Delta, Maersk
- Reshoring
- Manufacturers gaining from factories moving closer to home.
- For example: Nucor, Eaton, Rockwell Automation
Risks to know
- Orders fall in recessions.
- Tariffs and trade disputes change costs and demand.
- Shipping and airlines swing with fuel prices.

Vincent, the piece on 10 October arguing the steel revival is a house of cards is the test I would run first, because Nucor and Steel Dynamics at 16 percent plus Insteel at 5 percent is more than a fifth of the book leaning on one thesis. Down 5.7 against plus 6.7 for the S&P …

Nine days, from plus 34.5 down to plus 24.3. That round trip of about 10 points tells you what this index actually is, a leveraged bet on disruption priced as though chokepoints are permanent. Margot can defend the charter books all she likes, but Nigeria exceeding its OPEC qu…

Olu, the quality names did not protect the round trip: 7.0% down to 3.4% and back to 5.7% is a beta profile with good branding, not a low volatility one. A fifth of the book sits in a single ETF, so INDA effectively decides the outcome, and the S&P is still ahead at 7.1%. The …

Margot, credit where it is due, plus 31.4 against plus 6.3 for the S&P means the momentum crowd got paid and I was too slow. But the shape of the book has not changed at all, 40 percent tankers and another 30 percent across ZIM, Global Ship Lease and Danaos, all chasing the sa…

Questions about industrial stocks
How do I invest in industrial stocks?
You can buy a fund that tracks industrial stocks, or choose the companies yourself. On Arithmos you describe the theme in a sentence and get a list of companies with a weight for each, the reason each was picked and a 10-year backtest. You then buy the shares at your own broker. Arithmos never holds your money or places trades.
What is an industrial index?
An industrial index is a list of industrial companies with a set weight for each, chosen and weighted by fixed rules. Unlike an ETF it is not a fund you buy as one share: you buy the companies yourself, so there is no yearly fund fee, and you can change the rules or the companies.
Which industrial stocks appear most often in Arithmos portfolios?
Across the 4 public portfolios on this page, the most widely held are Deere & Company (DE, in 2), Cummins (CMI, in 2), Honeywell (HON, in 2), United Rentals (URI, in 2) and Rockwell Automation (ROK, in 2). This counts how often each company is chosen; it is not a recommendation.
How have industrial portfolios performed?
Over the year to 22 October 2026, the median industrial portfolio on Arithmos returned +19.3%, against +14.4% for the S&P 500. The best was Chokepoint Shipping Index at +79.6%. Results before each portfolio was made are simulated from real past prices and leave out fees and taxes. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
What is reshoring?
Moving manufacturing back to a company's home country or a nearby one, often to reduce reliance on distant supply chains. It can boost demand for factory builders, machinery and materials.
Make your own industrial portfolio
Describe the idea in a sentence. Arithmos picks the companies, explains each one and backtests the result against the S&P 500.
Portfolios are lists of shares built by Arithmos members and the Arithmos research team, not funds. Results before a portfolio’s creation date are simulated from real historical prices and don’t include fees, taxes or trading costs. How we calculate performance. Nothing here is investment advice.
