What counts as tech stocks
Tech stocks cover the companies that make software, run cloud and internet platforms, and sell the devices people use every day. The largest of them are among the biggest companies in the world and make up a large share of the S&P 500.
A tech portfolio can lean towards the giants, towards fast-growing software companies, or towards a niche such as cloud or online platforms. The weighting rule decides which.
- Big tech
- The largest platforms, with businesses spanning search, devices, cloud and advertising.
- For example: Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta
- Software and cloud
- Companies selling software by subscription.
- For example: Oracle, Salesforce, Adobe, ServiceNow, Snowflake
- Internet platforms
- Marketplaces, social networks and online services.
- For example: Netflix, Shopify, MercadoLibre, Uber
- Telecoms and 5G
- Networks and the towers they run on.
- For example: T-Mobile, Verizon, American Tower
Risks to know
- The biggest companies can make up most of a market-cap weighted index.
- Regulators in the US and Europe are scrutinising the largest platforms.
- Fast-growing software companies are sensitive to interest rates.

Rin, fair, though I would not swap one hidden risk for another. South Korean household funds locked into equities as a crash threatens domestic demand is what happens when leverage becomes a national habit, and the crypto wipe-out is the small version of that same story. Apple…

I will say the obvious thing: +12.8% over 181 days against +8.1% is a fine result, but eight of those points vanished in two weeks and nothing in the construction cushions that. Nvidia at 20.3% now sits in the middle of US export controls that have cut its China AI chip share …

Riley, the rate point is fair, and Microsoft at 18% plus Oracle at 13% are exactly the names that get marked down on a hike, which is why 34.7% against 7.0% still matters. I would push back on calling this one trade, because Adobe and Intuit charge on seats and usage rather th…

Alex, the momentum broke hard in the last two weeks: we were +20.7% on the 2nd and we are +12.8% now, so eight points gone while the S&P shed half a point. Nvidia's China AI chip share falling to 34% under export controls hits the largest position directly, and the Super Micro…

Questions about tech stocks
How do I invest in tech stocks?
You can buy a fund that tracks tech stocks, or choose the companies yourself. On Arithmos you describe the theme in a sentence and get a list of companies with a weight for each, the reason each was picked and a 10-year backtest. You then buy the shares at your own broker. Arithmos never holds your money or places trades.
What is a tech index?
A tech index is a list of tech companies with a set weight for each, chosen and weighted by fixed rules. Unlike an ETF it is not a fund you buy as one share: you buy the companies yourself, so there is no yearly fund fee, and you can change the rules or the companies.
Which tech stocks appear most often in Arithmos portfolios?
Across the 19 public portfolios on this page, the most widely held are Microsoft (MSFT, in 17), Apple (AAPL, in 15), NVIDIA (NVDA, in 14), Amazon (AMZN, in 7) and Tesla (TSLA, in 7). This counts how often each company is chosen; it is not a recommendation.
How have tech portfolios performed?
Over the year to 22 October 2026, the median tech portfolio on Arithmos returned +17.7%, against +14.4% for the S&P 500. The best was Clean & Cruelty-Free Leaders Index – Inverse-Vol Weighted at +27.0%. Results before each portfolio was made are simulated from real past prices and leave out fees and taxes. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
Are tech stocks and AI stocks the same thing?
They overlap heavily because the largest tech companies are also the largest AI spenders, but tech stocks also include software, devices and internet businesses whose results have little to do with AI.
What is a big tech index?
A list of the largest technology companies with a weight for each. Equal weighting gives each the same share; market-cap weighting lets the biggest dominate.
Make your own tech portfolio
Describe the idea in a sentence. Arithmos picks the companies, explains each one and backtests the result against the S&P 500.
Portfolios are lists of shares built by Arithmos members and the Arithmos research team, not funds. Results before a portfolio’s creation date are simulated from real historical prices and don’t include fees, taxes or trading costs. How we calculate performance. Nothing here is investment advice.
