The short version
- Arithmos is a research and data tool for exploring portfolio ideas.
- We are not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority or any other financial regulator.
- We do not give personal investment advice.
- We never hold your money, never hold your investments and never place trades.
- Performance figures are simulations based on past prices. They are not forecasts.
1. What Arithmos is
Arithmos turns an investing idea, written in plain English, into a portfolio: a list of public companies, a weighting for each, and a written reason for every pick. It then replays that portfolio against historical market prices and shows the result next to a benchmark.
Everything Arithmos produces is information for your own research. The portfolios are hypothetical. Nobody’s money is invested in them by Arithmos.
2. Regulatory status
Arithmos is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the United Kingdom, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States, or any other financial regulator. We do not carry on any regulated activity under the UK Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 or equivalent legislation elsewhere.
In practice this means:
- The Financial Ombudsman Service cannot consider complaints about Arithmos.
- The Financial Services Compensation Scheme does not cover anything you do using Arithmos.
- Any investing you do happens through your own broker, under that broker’s terms and whatever protections apply to it. Check those before you invest.
3. No personal advice
Arithmos does not know your financial situation, goals, tax position or attitude to risk, and does not assess whether any investment is suitable for you. A portfolio built on Arithmos reflects the idea that was typed in. It is not a recommendation to you or to anyone else.
Our guides and blog are general education. Companies and funds are named as examples, not as tips. If you are unsure whether an investment is right for you, speak to an authorised financial adviser.
4. No money, no custody, no trading
Arithmos does not open investment accounts, accept deposits, hold client money, hold or safeguard investments, or execute trades. Subscription payments for the Arithmos service itself are taken by our payment processor. They pay for software, not for investments.
If you decide to act on a portfolio, you place every order yourself with your own broker, and you remain responsible for each decision.
5. How performance figures are produced
Performance shown on Arithmos is simulated. We take the portfolio as it is defined today and calculate how it would have moved using historical prices. This has known limits, which we want you to read before relying on any number:
- Hindsight. A portfolio chosen today benefits from knowing which companies did well. Simulated history tends to look better than real results achieved at the time.
- Costs and tax. Figures are shown before dealing costs, spreads, platform fees and tax. Real returns would be lower.
- Since creation. Where a figure is labelled as since creation, it covers the period after the portfolio was published on Arithmos, using market prices from that date.
- No guarantee. Past performance, real or simulated, is not a reliable guide to future results. The value of investments can fall as well as rise.
The full method, including its limitations, is set out in How we test past performance.
6. Use of AI
Company selection and the written reasons are generated by AI models working from market data. AI can be wrong: it can misdescribe a company, include one that does not fit the idea, or miss one that does. Treat every output as a starting point for your own checking, not as a verified fact.
7. Market data
Prices and company information come from third-party data providers. Data can be delayed, incomplete or incorrect, and Arithmos does not guarantee its accuracy. Do not rely on prices shown here when placing an order. Use your broker’s live price.
8. Who publishes what
Portfolios and comments on Arithmos are published by members and by Arithmos’s own research accounts, some of which are automated. Portfolios marked as official are published by the Arithmos team. All of it is opinion and illustration, not advice, and a portfolio’s position on a leaderboard is a record of simulated past performance, not an endorsement.
9. How we communicate
We aim for everything we publish to be fair, clear and not misleading. In particular we try to:
- give risks the same prominence as potential gains;
- label simulated performance as simulated wherever it appears;
- avoid urgency, pressure and promises of returns;
- keep pricing and plan limits accurate and easy to find.
If you see something on Arithmos that falls short of this, please tell us using the contact details below.
10. Data protection
We handle personal data under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why. You can export or delete your data from your account settings, or by emailing privacy@arithmos.xyz.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
11. Complaints
If something has gone wrong, email contact@mail.arithmos.xyz or use the contact form. Tell us what happened, when, and what you would like us to do about it. We will look into it and reply by email.
Because Arithmos is not an FCA-authorised firm, the Financial Ombudsman Service is not available for complaints about us. Your rights as a consumer under UK law, including the 14-day cooling-off period for subscriptions described in our Terms, are not affected.
