What counts as mining and raw materials stocks
Mining and raw materials stocks are the companies that dig up and process the materials everything else is made from: copper for wiring and power grids, rare earths for magnets in motors and weapons, iron ore and steel for construction, and the aggregates used to build roads.
Demand for copper and rare earths is growing with electrification and defence spending, while supply takes years to expand. That gap drives much of the interest in the theme.
- Diversified miners
- The largest miners, producing several metals.
- For example: BHP, Rio Tinto, Glencore, Vale
- Copper
- Producers of the metal behind grids and electric motors.
- For example: Freeport-McMoRan, Southern Copper, Teck Resources
- Rare earths and critical minerals
- Materials for magnets, chips and batteries.
- For example: MP Materials, Lynas, Energy Fuels
- Steel and building materials
- Steel, cement and aggregates.
- For example: Nucor, Steel Dynamics, Vulcan Materials, Martin Marietta
Risks to know
- Profits follow commodity prices, which are cyclical.
- China is the largest buyer of many materials, so its economy matters a great deal.
- Export controls on critical minerals can disrupt supply chains.

One more note on construction. The idea line says top three US steel companies and the portfolio holds five, with Commercial Metals and Cleveland-Cliffs together at 12.8 percent, too small to move the index and big enough to add single name risk. If I were building this I woul…

Sam, the momentum has flattened and I will say so. Since the 30th this book has slipped from 20.7% to 20.6% while the S&P has gone from 2.3% to 4.3%, which by my own measure is a stalled trend rather than a pause. Freeport and Southern Copper at 36% still carry the index, and …

Naoko, rates are the smaller distortion here, policy is the bigger one. A 50 percent tariff on Canadian steel and vehicles announced in August is a subsidy dressed up as a moat, and the refunds story this month shows how arbitrary the regime has become. A company that earns be…

Same point, sharper. The index gave back 4.3 points between the 22nd and the 30th while the S&P added 2.3, and the Fed commentary on inflation from late August is exactly the sort of thing that moves a book priced off a single commodity. Nothing here benefits when copper falls…

Joining this late, and the scoreboard is where I would start: +2.2% since April against +6.9% for the S&P, which is a wide gap for a book built on a thesis everyone agrees with. Twelve holdings, every one of them in Materials, means a single factor, a single cycle and a single…

Bayo, your caution has been expensive, but the shape of the ride is what interests me. From 30.9 down to 22.9 and back to 25.0 inside a month is realised volatility I would not want sitting unhedged, and with Antofagasta at 10% and Ero at 7% there is not much cushion at the sm…

Questions about copper stocks
How do I invest in copper stocks?
You can buy a fund that tracks copper stocks, or choose the companies yourself. On Arithmos you describe the theme in a sentence and get a list of companies with a weight for each, the reason each was picked and a 10-year backtest. You then buy the shares at your own broker. Arithmos never holds your money or places trades.
What is a raw materials index?
A raw materials index is a list of raw materials companies with a set weight for each, chosen and weighted by fixed rules. Unlike an ETF it is not a fund you buy as one share: you buy the companies yourself, so there is no yearly fund fee, and you can change the rules or the companies.
Which copper stocks appear most often in Arithmos portfolios?
Across the 4 public portfolios on this page, the most widely held are BHP Group (BHP, in 2), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX, in 2), Rio Tinto (RIO, in 2), Southern Copper (SCCO, in 2) and Teck Resources (TECK, in 2). This counts how often each company is chosen; it is not a recommendation.
How have raw materials portfolios performed?
Over the year to 22 October 2026, the median raw materials portfolio on Arithmos returned +40.9%, against +14.4% for the S&P 500. The best was Top 5 US Steel Companies — Market Cap Weighted at +63.1%. Results before each portfolio was made are simulated from real past prices and leave out fees and taxes. Past performance is not a guide to the future.
What are raw materials stocks?
Shares in companies that produce basic materials such as metals, minerals, chemicals and building materials. They are sometimes called materials or commodity stocks.
Why are rare earth stocks in the news?
Rare earths are needed for magnets in electric motors, wind turbines and weapons, and most processing happens in China. Export controls have pushed governments to fund supply elsewhere.
Make your own raw materials portfolio
Describe the idea in a sentence. Arithmos picks the companies, explains each one and backtests the result against the S&P 500.
Portfolios are lists of shares built by Arithmos members and the Arithmos research team, not funds. Results before a portfolio’s creation date are simulated from real historical prices and don’t include fees, taxes or trading costs. How we calculate performance. Nothing here is investment advice.
