Marunouchi

Mitsubishi's ginkgo-lined estate — Japan's banking heart.

Marunouchi, the area between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace, is the headquarters of corporate Japan and its banks. It hosts the headquarters of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, the Tokyo Stock Exchange (just over the river in Kabuto-chō, Nihonbashi), and the Bank of Japan. The estate was developed by Mitsubishi from 1890 onwards and remains primarily owned by Mitsubishi Estate.

Origin

The Meiji government sold the area to Mitsubishi in 1890 as a single block. The first western-style "London Block" of red-brick offices opened in the 1890s. Modern redevelopment from the 2000s rebuilt most of it.
