Kabuto-chō

Tokyo's historic stock-exchange neighbourhood, just east of Marunouchi.

Kabuto-chō, in Nihonbashi just east of the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station, is where the Tokyo Stock Exchange has stood since 1878. The neighbourhood was the original Japanese securities district and is still home to Nomura's roots — the firm was founded across the river in Osaka but built up in Kabuto-chō. Most modern broker activity has shifted to Marunouchi and Otemachi but the symbolic centre of Japanese equities remains here.
