Raffles Place

Singapore's older banking core, named after Sir Stamford Raffles.

Raffles Place is the older Singapore banking district that predates Marina Bay. It clusters around Raffles Place MRT and Battery Road, with One Raffles Place, Republic Plaza, and OUE Bayfront anchoring the cluster. Many of the major Singaporean banks, foreign bank branches, and law firms have operations here even after the Marina Bay shift.

Origin

Originally Commercial Square, renamed in 1858 in honour of Sir Stamford Raffles. The skyscraper era began in the 1980s with OCBC Centre (then the tallest in SE Asia) and continues today.
