Crypto Valley

Switzerland's tax-friendly canton became Ethereum's birthplace.

Zug, a 25-minute train south of Zurich, became known as "Crypto Valley" after the Ethereum Foundation incorporated there in 2014. The canton's low corporate tax rate, friendly regulatory stance from FINMA, and a small but dense cluster of crypto firms (now including the Cardano Foundation, Tezos, Bitcoin Suisse and Sygnum Bank) make it a meaningful node in the global digital-assets industry. Glencore is also headquartered next door in Baar.

Origin

Zug had been a low-tax canton since the 1940s. Ethereum's incorporation as a Stiftung (Swiss foundation) in July 2014 catalysed the cluster; subsequent ICO booms and the Crypto Valley Association formalised it.
