Bankenviertel

The eurozone's central bank lives here.

Frankfurt's Bankenviertel — "banking district" — clusters around the Taunusanlage and Mainzer Landstraße. It is the seat of the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, Deutsche Börse, and the headquarters of Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank. After Brexit, several London-based investment banks (Goldman, JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley) significantly expanded their Frankfurt offices to maintain EU passporting.

Origin

Frankfurt has been a finance centre since the medieval Messe trade fairs. The Bundesbank set up here in 1948; the ECB, founded 1998, took over the role for the eurozone in 1999.
